Rocket Dog Rescue Turns 10!

Rocket Dog Rescue Celebrates 10 Years of Saving Dogs

The story of Rocket Dog Rescue and its founder Pali Boucher is one that many Bay Area dog lovers have heard.  Pali grew up homeless and left the streets behind after she adopted a hound dog named Leadbelly.  “It was just too painful to be out there with him,” she says, “I could see how hard it was on him better than I could see what it was doing to me.”  As soon as she had a place of her own she began helping other animals and ten years ago Rocket Dog Rescue was born out of this love for dogs that are out of any other chances.    RDR is known for taking dogs off of shelters’ euthanasia lists, not from their adoption pools.  They see themselves as the safety net for dogs that are left behind.

Today Pali describes the group as the strongest it has ever been. “At our 10th anniversary party there were so many faces we love, dog faces and incredible humans.  We love all the people that support us.  Our volunteers are the most effective, life-changing people I’ve ever had the chance to work with.”  RDR is looking for volunteers who can help with the nuts and bolts of their activities, including being part of the foster team.  Not everyone can foster dogs in their own home, the foster team is there to provide back-up and encouragement for foster homes, to make sure the dogs are listed on the website and have everything needed for a new chance at life.  “A one-time foster home can feel fully supported and connected to the larger group via the foster team so that they might be more willing to foster again,” explains Pali.

Given their ten years of successful adoptions of their signature hard case dogs what challenges will they take on next?  The group is looking for a space, affordable or donated, that they can use as a central meeting place for their team and for hosting events.  Love of dogs and a desire to save the ones who would otherwise fall through the cracks keeps them focused and growing.  “Really,” says Pali, “the whole thing is magical.”
