The Nose Knows

The Dog Days of Summer officially began on July 3. It is so named because it’s the dawn of the dog star, Sirius, in Egypt.

Stanley Coren, dog behaviorist at the University of British Columbia, says that a dog may like to ride in a car with the windows open because it gives him “a kaleidoscopic view of the world through his nose.” Dogs have 225 million olfactory receptacles in their noses, compared with 50 million in humans.

The last dog owned by Lucille Ball was a white toy poodle named Tinker Toy given to her by her husband, Gary Morton.

The 2016 winner of the ugliest dog in California (held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in June) is Sweepee Rambo, a Chihuahua/Chinese crested miniature dog owned by Jason Wurtz of Van Nuys.

Drako the Belgian Malinois, owned by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, is one of a growing number of dogs trained nationwide that can find contraband cell phones.
