Among the 2020 presidential candidates, Elizabeth Warren has a Golden Retriever named Bailey, Pete Buttigieg has a Beagle/Pug named Buddy and Beagle/Lab named Truman, Beto O’Rourke has a Black Lab named Artemis, Joe Biden has a German Shepherd named Major, Kristen Gillibrand has a Labradoodle named Maple, and John Hickenlooper has an Akita-Bulldog-Chow-chow mix named Skye.

At the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, Sir Peers Legh’s body was guarded by his mastiff as the battle raged. On returning to England, this dog reputedly started the famous Lyme Hall Mastiff bloodline.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word “beagle” was first mentioned in English literature in the 1475 verse “The Squire of Low Degree.”

A 10-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever named Frida that retired in June 2019 from the Mexican navy has seen more disasters than most people see in a lifetime. She is credited with saving the lives of 12 people and helped with rescue operations after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the 2016 earthquake in Ecuador, and the explosion at the Pemex tower in Mexico City in 2013.
