Show Them the Love: Say It With Snacks
You love your pooch, and Valentine’s Day offers a perfect excuse to spoil your fur-baby rotten, as if you don’t do that every day anyway. Bay Woof checked in with two dog treat bakers, Mary Ellen Oertel of Ma Snax Superior Treats and Carla Ocfemia of Paw Patch Pastries, for advice on seasonal yummies like cakes and treats for your canine BFF.
Cakes and Cupcakes
Mary Ellen Oertel established Ma Snax in Sonoma in 2015 with Ray Masnack, professional chefs, caters, and dog lovers — pit bull terrier and bully breed dog fans specifically — who wanted to fête their puppy Penny with wholesomeness they found lacking on the market. They created original new natural biscuit flavors using botanicals, supplements, whole fruits, seeds, and nuts. Today, Ma Snax makes a full line of dog biscuits, DIY cake and biscuit mixes, hand-decorated iced cookies, and custom gingerbread doghouses and cookies plus private label branding for retailers and custom labeled packaged treats for consumers and nonprofits.
Here’s Oretel with information on Ma Snax cake mix ($9.75 for carob peanut): Cake for dogs may sound a bit unusual, but dogs actually love it. It’s a little something different. They typically find the softer texture delightful. Senior dogs are especially pleased because many crunchy biscuits and jerky treats can be tricky and difficult to chew. Baking a small cupcake is ideal because they can be frozen and thawed as needed. We like to mix it up and keep it seasonal by incorporating as many healthy fats, fruits, and veggies we can. Always be sure what you’re feeding is safe; check with your vet if you aren’t sure. Possibly the best thing about baking your own cake for your dogs is that regardless of how it turns out, they will love it. Ma Snax makes a Carob-Peanut Cake mix that’s super fun and easy as well as two biscuit mixes, so do give one a try. Fun for the whole family. Happy baking!
Healthy PupCake From Ma Snax Superior Dog Treats.
(makes one 8-inch cake, six or more cupcakes, or many mini-pupcakes)
1 cup organic whole wheat flour
1 cup organic unbleached wheat flour
2 medium carrots and/or apples, grated
Canned or fresh pumpkin, or grated summer squash can also be used.
2 cage free organic eggs
3 ounce canola oil or mild olive oil or liquified coconut oil
4 ounce raw honey
1 tablespoon organic flax meal or shelled hemp seeds
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon organic ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon organic ground ginger
Combine dry ingredients, set aside. Mix eggs, carrots, apples, honey, and oil in bowl of electric mixer or by hand. Add combined dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not over mix. Place batter in prepared cake pan or paper-lined cupcake pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 18 to 25 minutes or until set. Cool. Decorating suggestions: Ice with organic peanut butter mixed with honey or organic cream cheese/yogurt mixed with honey. Garnish with natural shredded coconut or ground peanuts, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds. Note: Cake freezes well. Just pop one out of the freezer for a sweet treat. Serve to lucky dogs!
Cookies and Treats
San Francisco’s Paw Patch Pastries has been making homemade cookies from scratch since 2006 for pals and family until the passion for heathtly dog treats was turned into a business in 2010. Chef-owner Carla Ocfemia attended culinary school and baked human goodies until determining she liked cooking for dogs more.
Here’s what’s in store for Paw Patch Pastries fans from Ocfemia, who was rolling them out as Bay Woof went to press:
We have Valentine’s treats that are adorable and new. Naturally we will have other amazing treats, but we are super excited to announce these new goodies. We have personal size Conversation Heart Cakes, and these will even have the humans drooling and thinking they want one for themselves. They will come in two flavors, Romeo’s Red Velvet or Peanut Butter. We will also have our Puppy Luv Brunch Box made for two. Each box will come with heart shaped fur-ttatas, truffles, and a puppy luv cookies ($23 or add a bottle of “dog champagne” for an additional $7). And for the pup that wants a simple snack with a big bite, we have our Strawberry Cheesecake Bites. These little bites are like strawberries bursting in your mouth and are coated with a vanilla yogurt. There are no pre-orders on these yummies, and they are here for a limited time. Last day to get these will be Wednesday, Feb. 14.
