After the Ball 2019. Thu., Oct. 10, 6-9 p.m., aboard the USS Hornet, Alameda, $150. Help save homeless pets by attending the ninth annual gala and fundraiser benefitting the Alameda Animal Shelter, which is managed by Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter. The evening includes gourmet hors d’oeuvres, a buffet, dessert, beer, wind, a cocktail special, a live DJ, live and silent auctions, raffle, and games.

Bark in the Park 2019. Sat., Sept. 21, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., free, William Street Park, S. 16th Street and E. William Street, San Jose. Bark in the Park is the largest dog festival in the United States with more than 15,000 dog lovers and 3,900 dogs. Contests include a dog costume contest, dog/owner look-alike contest, and tail wagging contest. Plus, there will be demonstrations of dog agility and specialized dog training, food, and drink, and more than 75 dog goods and services vendors. Money raised benefits local community and pet-focused organizations including Humane Society Silicon Valley, San Jose.

Bay Area Pet Fair 2019. Sat.-Sun., Sept. 14-15, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., free, Alameda County Fairgrounds, 4501 Pleasanton Ave., Pleasanton. The Bay Area Pet Fair, hosted by Pet Food Express, is a huge pet adoption and pet party. Last year’s fair featured more than 75 rescues and shelters and 140,000 attendees of whom nearly 2,000 adopted a new pet. Pets on leash are welcome and encouraged. Live shows and demos, Splash Dog competitions, activities for people and pets, a variety of food and drink options, lots of giveaways and prizes, and tons of samples and goodies to take home.

Best in Show — Stories From Beyond the Shelter Essay Contest. Fri., Oct. 18, 7-10 p.m., Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, 2020 Addison St., Berkeley. Dogs and cats are more than people. They’re family. Dog Walking Academy. Attend dog-walking school at your pace from the comfort of home. The Online DWA is comprised of five units covering 14 key topics. Instruction includes lecture, visuals, video, and interactive activities., $850,

Guide Dogs for the Blind’s Graduation Ceremonies. Sat., Sept. 14, 1:30 p.m. Guide Dogs for the Blind California Campus, 350 Los Ranchitos Road, San Rafael. Honor the independence and companionship that GDB’s exceptional guide dogs provide for the people they will serve. These services also allow GDB clients to meet the committed puppy raisers who cared for their canine heroes until they were old enough to begin formal training at GDB’s campus. Show up 20-30 minutes before graduations. Graduation-day public tours of the campus are offered at 10:30 a.m. or noon on the days of the ceremonies. Pre-registered bus groups are also welcome. Marin Humane Gala 2019 Pawsport to Happiness. Fri., Sept. 14, 5:30-10 p.m., Marin Humane, Novato Campus, 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato. This is an evening of fun, food, fundraising, and lots of furry friends to help Marin Humane.

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue Senior Prom 2019. Sat., Sept. 21, 6-11 p.m., City View at Metreon, 135 Fourth St., No. 4000, San Francisco. Celebrate the Gold Age of Hollywood at Muttville’s Senior Prom. VIP cocktail reception for table sponsors, 6-6:30 p.m.; cocktails, dinner, and program, 6:30-10 p.m.; after party with dessert, drinks, and dancing, 10-11 p.m.

SVACA and Friends of SVACA present the Third Annual Pour for Paws event featurings silent and live auctions, prize drawings, Black Ridge Vineyards estate wines, and live music. Enjoy a fun evening, raise money for a great cause, and you can bring your four-legged pal. Proceeds from the event directly benefit the animals at SVACA.

Tails at Twilight 2019. Sat., Sept. 21, 6-9 p.m., $75, East Bay SPCA, Dublin, 4651 Gleason Dr., Dublin. This is the East Bay SPCA’s first Tails at its adoption center with craft beer, wine, food, and silent auction items. Proceeds support the East Bay SPCA’s lifesaving programs and services, including animal shelters and adoption services in Oakland and Dublin, full-service veterinary clinic, foster care, behavior and training programs, youth camps and educational programs for children and teens in local public schools.,
