Baja Ponchos Are Rugged and Cute

Off The Shelf

When Baja Ponchos suggested investigating a serape as a Halloween costume in the fall, I said, sure, what the heck, send one to Bay Woof, and I’ll check it out. But what arrived goes way beyond the costume category.

These high-quality “ponchos,” created from hand-woven serape blankets in Tlaxcala, Mexico, are beautifully bright, well constructed, and a real fashion statement. They’re soft, pliable, rugged, and easy to put on, too, keeping dogs warm and chilly-weather protected as well as stylish. Test dog Cody, a terrier, has been known to make regular rounds at a local barn sporting his blue one (and sometimes a jaunty cowboy hat), turning heads with his attitude and smart look.

The garment is 65 percent polyester and 35 percent acrylic and uses Velcro closures around the chest and belly to remain securely in place. It does have to be hand-washed, though Cody’s family hasn’t felt a need to do so yet, and he’s been wearing his regularly this winter season. They come in two colors — pink (shown) or blue — but that just means the thickest stripe is the primary color and repeated in the weave with complimenting and contrasting hues throughout. Each has a harness loop. Sizing goes from XXS to XXL and includes measurements around the body, girth, and neck; the website has sizing chart, and Baja Ponchos seems pretty good at guessing. The ponchos sell for $19.99.

“The concept of our dog poncho was created after a surf trip in rural Baja,” said Baja Ponchos founder Nicole O’Connor in an email, adding the ponchos “represent the vibrant-colored Baja life. We hope our products bring a smile to your face and a pep in your pet’s walk.”

A nice thing about Baja Ponchos is that it donates a portion of sales to the Baja California Spay & Neuter Foundation, a nonprofit promoting population control of Baja dogs and cats.

Finally, if your furry friend freaks out over thunderstorms, O’Conner suggested the poncho can act as stress and anxiety reducer, thanks to its snug fit. Find these unique ponchos at, and tell them Bay Woof sent you.
