Aries March 21 - April 19
Oh, those Aries pups. The Aries ram-lamb dichotomy means one day you can have a sweet little puppy and the next day Kujo. Still, the Aries dog is one loyal, loving creature. Regular belly rubs will help to soothe the wild beast within.

Taurus April 20 - May 20
Don’t get caught in a tug-o-war match with your Taurean canine, born under the sign of the bull. He will wear you down with his perseverance. It is also best not to fancy yourself a Spanish Bullfighter who can provoke and then dominate him. Think of him as Ferdinand the Bull – mighty but sweet – and lead him with a gentle strength.

Gemini May 21 - June 20
Do you sometimes feel that your Gemini pup is a two-headed monster? One minute he’s the perfect lap dog and the next he treats you like you’re in the dog house. Geminis don’t mean to send mixed messages, they just have a least two distinct sides and can’t help it. If it makes you feel better, your pup is sometimes just as confused as you are.

Cancer June 21 - July 22
Your Cancer canine will live up to the moniker of “Man’s Best Friend” (“Person’s Best Friend” in PC terms). He is loyal, loves being home with you, and would surely cook you dinner if it weren’t for the lack of opposable thumbs. Okay, the cancer dog can be a little cranky-pants sometimes – he was born under the sign of the crab, after all – and that’s when being “in the doghouse” is a good thing. He likes having his private space, so give him a cozy crate to call his own.

Leo July 23 - Aug 22
All will be well with your four-legged Leo friend if you remember that the sun really does rise and fall with him. You may only have a postage stamp for a backyard (this is the Bay Area, after all), but your non-feline furry pal wants to be king of whatever forest you’ve got. Shower him with praise and affection and he just might become the most lovable and loyal one in your lair.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22
Grooming is key for Virgo pets, as they like things to be in order. In the order of command, though, remember to maintain a good grasp on your Virgo dog’s leash. He may be sweet, but he is also strong willed. If my late, great Akita/Shepherd mix was representative of Virgo canines, they also have an inner calm that can rival the Buddha and comfort your soul.

Libra Sept 23 - Oct 22
“Comfy and cozy” is this creature’s creed. He loves all the comforts of home – and of the local pet emporium. But don’t let his attachment to his deluxe organic cotton dog bed fool you; he has a taste for adventure. Make sure your walking regime is varied and exciting so he isn’t tempted to wander off on his own sojourns.

Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21
Does it sometimes seem that your doggy has special telepathic powers or, just maybe, is the reincarnation of your most wacky deceased relative? Scorpio is the most mysterious sign and its canine cohort is fond of deep and dark places. Don’t worry if your Scorpio pup howls at the moon; it’s part of his nature. But since his bark may be as bad as his bite, keep him indoors when the moon is full.

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21
A noble and physically exuberant Mr. Smarty Pants is what you will have in your Sag dog. Don’t even think about going on a trek in the Sierras without packing a “pup” tent, because this sign loves sights unseen and prairies un-romped. Your Sagittarius friend will leave no gopher hole un–checked, to be sure, but makes a steadfast and fabulous sidekick.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19
Have you noticed how some dogs at the dog park run around in erratic patterns like whirling dervishes, while others trot back and forth following the same route until they’re tired out? The latter is your Capricorn pet – a creature of habit, for sure, who knows exactly where he wants to put the laser beam of his attention. This, of course, means that you will be the focus of his unwavering love.

Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18
Your Aquarius pet makes a great, if unpredictable, pal. How can one dog be so sweet and so sneaky? He will be full of devotion to you, but may one day devote himself to stealing the steak right off your plate. The Aquarius dog is definitely one great party animal and will surely be the talk of the dog park.

Pisces Feb 19 - March 20
Be sure to take your Pisces pup to the nearest pool or pond. A dog born under this sign loves and needs the water, so take lots of towels along. And prepare yourself for the love muffin of pups. This guy lives by a wonderful rule: one good lick is worth a thousand barks.
